Early Works

“There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.”

Lord Byron

Landscape Study: Fairfield Farm

During an art trip to the Hotchkiss farm, I discovered  a thicket hidden behind some white bales of hay.  The trees and hills in the background at first created a quiet,  pastoral scene.  But instead of a serene, peaceful feeling I often associate with traditional landscape settings, the wild growth of bramble and weeds constrained by a wooden post and fence, created an expressive messiness and energy I found compelling.

Title: Knowledge, 2018

Medium: Graphite, watercolor on bristol

Concept: This piece attempts to answer the essential questions of how do we know what we know, and how do we know the right thing to do?  It illustrates the relationship and exchange of knowledge between God and Adam, and compares the knowledge we gain from figures of authority with the knowledge we gain from our own experience.  The hands depicted in graphite are a reference to Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, in which Michelangelo depicts God as the all-powerful figure bestowing knowledge upon Adam.  The hands rendered in graphite symbolize the structure and predictability of gaining primary knowledge through society and its institutions. The light, nuanced wash in the background, creates a homogenous look meant to illustrate the fundamentality of basic knowledge everyone is bestowed. In contrast, the dark ink hands, depict a looser, more abstract interpretation that represents the unconfined and imprecise process of learning through one’s own experience, and the unpredictability of searching for what is right, by questioning and considering other perspectives and opinions.
